Shingles

Shingles Treatment in Barking road - NHS Pharmacy First at Newmans Pharmacy

Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The earlier you start antiviral treatment ideally within 72 hours of the rash appearing the better your chances of reducing pain and the risk of long-term nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia).

At Newmans Pharmacy on Barking Road, Plaistow, our pharmacists can assess shingles and supply antiviral medication under the NHS Pharmacy First service for adults aged 18 and over completely free, no GP appointment required.

How to Recognise Shingles

Shingles usually starts with tingling, burning or pain in one area of your body, followed within a few days by:

  • A red rash, usually on one side of the body or face
  • Fluid-filled blisters that crust over
  • Pain that can be severe, often described as burning or stabbing
  • Flu-like symptoms fever, headache, fatigue

The rash typically follows a single nerve path a strip down one side of the body or across the face.

Why Speed Matters

Antiviral medication (aciclovir, valaciclovir or famciclovir) is most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing. After that, antivirals are less effective and the risk of postherpetic neuralgia long-term nerve pain that can last months or years increases significantly.

If you suspect shingles, walk into Newmans Pharmacy today. Don’t wait.

Frequently Asked Question

Is shingles contagious?

You can’t catch shingles from someone, but if someone who hasn’t had chickenpox touches the fluid in the blisters, they could develop chickenpox. Keep the rash covered.

The NHS offers free shingles vaccination to people aged 65–80 and immunocompromised adults aged 50+. Talk to your GP about eligibility.

We’ll still assess you and can supply antivirals if your rash is widespread, severe or affecting your face. Otherwise, we’ll focus on pain management and refer if needed.

Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, adults aged 18 and over can be assessed and treated for shingles at Newman’s Pharmacy. If our pharmacist confirms you have shingles, we can provide antiviral medication (like Aciclovir) directly to help speed up recovery and reduce pain.

For the best results, antiviral treatment should ideally be started within 72 hours of the rash appearing. Early treatment is crucial as it helps reduce the severity of the infection and lowers the risk of long-term complications like nerve pain (post-herpetic neuralgia).
