How to Recognise Shingles
Shingles usually starts with tingling, burning or pain in one area of your body, followed within a few days by:
- A red rash, usually on one side of the body or face
- Fluid-filled blisters that crust over
- Pain that can be severe, often described as burning or stabbing
- Flu-like symptoms fever, headache, fatigue
The rash typically follows a single nerve path a strip down one side of the body or across the face.
Why Speed Matters
Antiviral medication (aciclovir, valaciclovir or famciclovir) is most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing. After that, antivirals are less effective and the risk of postherpetic neuralgia long-term nerve pain that can last months or years increases significantly.

Is shingles contagious?
You can’t catch shingles from someone, but if someone who hasn’t had chickenpox touches the fluid in the blisters, they could develop chickenpox. Keep the rash covered.
Should I get the shingles vaccine?
The NHS offers free shingles vaccination to people aged 65–80 and immunocompromised adults aged 50+. Talk to your GP about eligibility.
What if I'm past the 72-hour window?
We’ll still assess you and can supply antivirals if your rash is widespread, severe or affecting your face. Otherwise, we’ll focus on pain management and refer if needed.
Can the pharmacy treat shingles without a GP appointment?
Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, adults aged 18 and over can be assessed and treated for shingles at Newman’s Pharmacy. If our pharmacist confirms you have shingles, we can provide antiviral medication (like Aciclovir) directly to help speed up recovery and reduce pain.
