About the Yellow Fever Vaccine

The yellow fever vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine given as a single injection. For most healthy individuals, one dose provides lifelong immunity and the ICVP certificate is valid for life. The vaccine takes up to 10 days to become fully effective, so we recommend visiting Newman’s Pharmacy at least 2 to 4 weeks before your travel date.

What Is the ICVP Yellow Fever Certificate?

The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) is the official document issued by authorised centres confirming you have received the yellow fever vaccine. It is recognised internationally and is required for entry to many countries. Only registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres such as Newman’s Pharmacy are legally permitted to issue this certificate.

Who Should Get the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

The yellow fever vaccine is recommended for most travellers aged 9 months and over who are visiting yellow fever endemic or at-risk regions. It is not suitable for certain groups including:

  • Infants under 6 months of age
  • Individuals with severe egg allergy
  • Individuals with a severely compromised immune system
  • Pregnant women only if travel cannot be avoided and the risk is considered high

Our pharmacists will conduct a brief health assessment before administering the vaccine to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.

How long is the yellow fever certificate valid?

We recommend getting vaccinated at least 10 days before travel, as this is how long the vaccine takes to become effective. Ideally, visit Newman’s Pharmacy in Plaistow 2 to 4 weeks before your departure date to allow plenty of time.

We recommend booking an appointment to ensure our travel health pharmacist is available and that the vaccine is in stock. However, please feel free to call us or visit our Barking Road, Plaistow pharmacy to check availability.

Like all vaccines, the yellow fever vaccine can cause mild side effects in some individuals, including soreness at the injection site, mild headache, muscle aches, or low-grade fever. Serious adverse reactions are rare. Our pharmacists will advise you fully before vaccination.

The yellow fever vaccine is not routinely available on the NHS for travel purposes. It must be obtained from a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, such as Newman’s Pharmacy on Barking Road, Plaistow.
